Done Deal: Comcast-Spectacor Buys Live Nation's Paciolan
March 09, 2010 - Touring

By Ray Waddell, Nashville

Comcast-Spectacor, the Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment firm, has completed its acquisition of ticketing software provider Paciolan from Live Nation Entertainment. Terms were not disclosed.

As a result of the acquisition, Comcast-Spectacor will now own Paciolan’s ticketing platform and other technology, together with the company’s accounts.

The deal was set in motion as a condition of the Department of Justice’s approval of the Live Nation/Ticketmaster merger. Ticketmaster had acquired Paciolan and its roster of some 200 clients in a deal that closed in 2008. The stated goal of the DOJ’s decision regarding Paciolan was to create competition to the merged ticketing operations of Live Nation and Ticketmaster.

The Paciolan acquistion provides a competitive boost to Comcast-Spectacor, which has assets that include facility management (through Global Spectrum), catering and concessions (through Ovations Food Services), selling naming rights and sponsorships (through Front Row Marketing Services), and ticketing (through New Era and now Paciolan).

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Comcast-Spectacor, Paciolan will operate as a separate entity from Comcast-Spectacor’s New Era Tickets division. Paciolan’s niche in the ticketing business includes college athletics programs, performing arts organizations, arenas, professional sports teams, and museums. Paciolan will also have the right to list events it services on ticketmaster.com in order to help clients reach more consumers and sell more tickets.

Comcast-Spectacor is renewing it’s relationship with Paciolan, as the company had been minority owners of Paciolan from 2004 until the Ticketmaster acquisition. Dave Butler, CEO of Paciolan, and founder Jane Kleinberger will remain with the firm.
